With NBA free agency opening soon, Russell Westbrook is drawing interest from multiple teams. The New York Knicks are reportedly a top contender to sign the veteran guard, while his future with the Denver Nuggets appears increasingly uncertain.

According to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, the New York Knicks have emerged as a potential suitor for the former MVP guard.
“Add the Pelicans, Knicks and Timberwolves to the ever-growing list of teams said to be in the market for veteran guards,” Stein wrote. “The Knicks, in fact, are said to be a possible destination — in addition to Sacramento and a potential return to Denver — for Russell Westbrook.”
After signing with the Denver Nuggets for the 2024–25 season, Westbrook’s future in the Mile High City appears uncertain. While he had a solid regular season, the 35-year-old underperformed during the postseason, particularly in Denver’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
With rumors of a possible Bruce Brown reunion in Denver, it’s increasingly likely that Westbrook’s time with the Nuggets could be short-lived.
Following their Eastern Conference Finals loss to the Indiana Pacers, the New York Knicks are reportedly looking to strengthen their backcourt depth. Westbrook could offer an immediate upgrade over current reserve guards like Delon Wright and Cameron Payne.
Although Westbrook’s role has evolved in recent seasons, his playmaking, rebounding, and intensity remain valuable, particularly for a team with championship aspirations.
Other Teams in the Mix
The New Orleans Pelicans and Minnesota Timberwolves have also been mentioned as teams with interest in veteran guards, but New York may offer Westbrook the clearest path to rotation minutes on a contending roster.
A return to Denver hasn’t been ruled out either, though signs point toward mutual exploration of new opportunities.
