The Miami Dolphins finally traded All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers, leading to the team getting back All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. The rare player-for-player trade helped the Dolphins significantly after losing safety Jevon Holland, but also left the cornerback roster lacking.
Miami has a lot of unproven talent at the cornerback position, which means the Dolphins are likely to explore either signing a veteran free agent or pulling off a trade for a cornerback.
One team the Dolphins are already being linked to is the Kansas City Chiefs. As it stands right now, the Chiefs have 12 corners on the roster and could part with one for some draft capital.
According to AtoZ sports writer Charles Goldman, the Dolphins might call the Chiefs for their many secondary players.
"Naturally, the Kansas City Chiefs are a team that will come up in hypothetical situations involving the cornerback position. Why? Because they've found themselves with a surplus at the position (12 corners on the 90-man offseason roster) and multiple expiring contracts following the 2025 NFL season. That said, it doesn't necessarily mean the timing is right for Kansas City to make a trade," Goldman writes.
Goldman also breaks down the corners on the roster that the Dolphins could be interested in. Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Kristian Fulton, Joshua Williams, and Nazeeh Johnson are all potentials, though he also indicates that McDuffie and Fulton are unlikely to be moved, considering they are contracted through the 2026 season.
Watson, Williams, and Johnson are all prime trade targets.
Watson is the backup to McDuffie on the depth chart and finished the 2024 season with 32 tackles and six passes defended through six games.
Williams played in all 17 games and started in six. He ended the 2024 season with 33 tackles and six passes defended. He fell down the depth chart and could be a potential target.
Johnson is on the depth chart behind Watson. Johnson appeared in 16 games and started six in 2024. He ended the season with 56 tackles, five passes defended, and one sack.
Though all three could potentially start, their places on the depth chart are a bit concerning. Still, Watson, Williams, and Johnson have also started multiple games, showcasing they are veterans with an upside.
The Dolphins are likely to look back to Asante Samuel Jr., or grab a veteran like Stephon Gilmore or Xavien Howard, but depth pieces might matter as well.
Either way, Miami needs to fill the secondary hole left by Ramsey.
