Man United are keen to sign a striker this summer as they aim to add more goals to Ruben Amorim’s squad.
Arsenal are also keen on Gyokeres, and so Man United have plenty of alternative targets to consider. The likes of Hugo Ekitike, Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney have recently been linked to the Red Devils, with United expected to sign a number nine before the new season.
The new nine would play in front of Matheus Cunha, who they signed from Wolves at the start of the transfer window. Furthermore, United also want to add Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford to play behind the striker too.
Man United learn €52m release clause for Moise Kean
Aside from the likes of Gyokeres, there are a few under-the-radar strikers that have been linked with United too. One of which is Fiorentina’s Moise Kean, who had a superb season in the Serie A last season.
Kean made 44 appearances in all competitions for Fiorentina, scoring 25 goals and providing three assists. He was the second-top scorer in the Serie A, just behind Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui.
According to Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport, Fiorentina have revealed a €52m release clause in Kean’s contract at the club. It works out at a fee of around £44.5m, making him significantly cheaper than alternatives. The report says that Kean’s release clause will last for just two more weeks, however, taking it until July 15.
Gyokeres is expected to cost around £70m, Watkins around £60m, and Ekitike as much as £85m. Kean would provide a significant saving of transfer budget, which would be useful considering United’s precarious financial position with regards to Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
Kean previously played in the Premier League when he was at Everton; however, it didn’t work out for the Italy international. He moved to Juventus in 2023, before joining Fiorentina in 2024 for £11m. He has since become one of the best strikers in Italy.
Speaking about Kean, former Fiorentina head coach Vincenzo Italiano told Sky Sport Italia: “Moise has shown incredible growth this season. His work rate, finishing, and ability to lead the line have been phenomenal. He’s becoming a complete striker.”
Would Moise Kean be a good addition for Man United?
In terms of goal scoring statistics, there is no reason why Kean would be a flop at Man United considering his form from the past two years in the Serie A. Furthermore, Kean would also be cheaper than alternative targets which is a huge boost for Amorim.
The 25-year-old is very quick, and he has the ability to get in behind opposing defences and beat the keeper one on one. It would be a useful addition for a United team who are seriously lacking attacking pace. Combine him with Cunha and Mbeumo, and the Red Devils would have an electric front line.
The biggest issue with Kean is that he is more of a centre-forward rather than a complete number nine. He plays more of a similar role to Cunha, and so the question is whether he is the right sort of player to start up front for Amorim’s side.
Furthermore, Kean was very much a flop in the Premier League with Everton, so there is no guarantee that this time round he would be better. Although, that having been said, his form over the past year certainly shows that he is more than capable of delivering on the big stage.
