Milwaukee Bucks Bring Back Forward Taurean Prince on New 2-Year Deal

It has been a busy couple of days for the Milwaukee Bucks front office. On Sunday, the team re-signed fan-favorite Bobby Portis to a new three-year contract that will keep him in Milwaukee for the foreseeable future. With Brook Lopez signing a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Clippers (worth $18 million), there is a chance that Portis, who is a perennial Sixth Man of the Year candidate, could become the Bucks starting center.

On Monday, with the opening of NBA free agency, Milwaukee re-signed guard Kevin Porter Jr. to a two-year $11 million contract using their biannual exception. The move, while keeping a productive player on the roster, was met with mixed reactions as some fans understandably do not want him on the team due to his past domestic violence arrest.

Also on Monday, the Bucks re-signed another player from last year’s team in hopes that he can provide some front court depth.

After the news regarding Porter and Lopez was announced, ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania reported that the Bucks have also re-signed forward Taurean Prince to a two-year contract:

Last season, Prince finished third in the NBA amongst qualified shooters by hitting 44% of his three point attempts. He averaged 8.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.0 steals per game (80 games, 73 starts) while averaging just over 27 minutes per contest.

Prince’s deal, which includes a player option for the second season, is a veteran minimum deal. Because Milwaukee had his non-Bird rights, they could offer him up to 120% of the minimum salary without having to use one of their exceptions (i.e., mid-level exception, trade exception, etc.; they used their biannual exception on Kevin Porter Jr., as previously stated).

Last season, Prince was oftentimes used out of position, being asked to play shooting guard when Milwaukee used big lineups. He is much better suited as a small or power forward, and even then perhaps better suited in a bench role.

It will be interesting to see how the Bucks fill out their roster going forward, but having a 44% three-point shooter over just over $3.5 million a year is not a bad thing, especially on a team that boasts Giannis Antetokounmpo.
