Giorgi Mamardashvili completes Liverpool transfer 10 months after deal confirmed

Nearly a year after Giorgi Mamardashvili’s transfer to Liverpool was confirmed, the goalkeeper is now officially a Red.

The player’s transfer was announced on August 27 2024 and was actually the first signing of the Arne Slot era. However, Liverpool opted to defer his move for a year, in which time Mamardashvili remained at Valencia.

Contrary to some suggestions, the Georgian international was not signed 10 months ago and loaned back to Valencia, where he has spent the last four years and made 134 appearances.

His move to Anfield for a fee of £25million ($34M) plus £4M ($5M) in add-ons became official as of today (Tuesday 1 July) and Mamardashvili will meet up with his new teammates next week when preseason begins.

Liverpool’s players return to Kirkby on Monday 7 July, with the majority expected back on day one given there were no international tournaments this summer. The exception could be Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton, who were involved in England Under-21’s success at the European Championships.

Mamardashvili will form part of a new-look goalkeeping unit that is still spearheaded by Alisson. The Brazilian has seen his deputies Caoimhin Kelleher, Víitezslav Jaros and Harvey Davies move on this summer, with Freddie Woodman’s signing announced last week and Armin Pecsi joining the Under-21s.

Mardashvili will push Alisson for a starting spot this season and has already confirmed his plans to remain at the club and not leave on loan.

“They are looking at me as the Liverpool goalkeeper for the next 10 years,” the stopper told Geo Team in May.

“My next step will be the same as it was in Valencia. I will go and prove myself and do what I can.

“The main thing is patience, training and hard work, and everything else will come by itself. I think it will be good, training with [Alisson] will help me grow too and I will gain a lot of experience with him.”

Mardashvili's arrival will be the sixth new addition of the summer along with Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Pecsi and Woodman.

Leaving Valencia, Mamardashvili bid an emotional farewell to supporters at the end of the season. “It's always a pleasure to defend this club,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Tomorrow, I will play my final game at home with this shirt. I wait for you all at Mestalla. Upward always.”

It’s expected the 24-year-old will play second fiddle to Alisson in the upcoming season but is seen as his potential long-term heir.

Liverpool fans could get a first glimpse of the new goalkeeper next weekend when the Reds face Preston North End in the first game of pre-season on 13 July.
