Go time for Newcastle in the transfer market after £73m loss a thing of the past - opinion

July has to be a big month for Newcastle United in the transfer market after a £73million PSR boost.

Indeed, the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules do not allow clubs to lose more than £105million over a three-year accounting period.

Newcastle could not spend to any meaningful degree last summer for breaching the PSR rules, which would have risked a points deduction.

All of that has changed now, however.

Newcastle United need to take action after £73m PSR boost

Newcastle lost £73million in 2022-23, but that has now dropped out of the PSR calculations.

With that in mind, the club should have much more room to spend this summer. Eddie Howe wanted Newcastle to make signings quickly, and now one of the hurdles looks to have been toppled.

The £73million on their balance sheet has dropped as of Tuesday 1 July, 2025. It’s now a thing of the past, and the Newcastle United owners need to strengthen Howe’s options.

The Newcastle United manager cannot be expected to work miracles forever. While last season was a testament to Howe’s coaching ability after failing to sign any first-team players, asking him to qualify for the Champions League and win a major trophy again next season without making an addition feels ridiculous.

Frankly, the Newcastle United squad does not look strong enough to compete in every competition next season. There’s been slow progress thus far, but the £73million anchor is no longer a thing to worry about.

PIF face balancing act at Newcastle United as PSR looms

It’s brilliant that Newcastle will theoretically have more leeway in terms of spending this summer.

Still, while Newcastle are in a strong PSR position now, it won’t be the case forever.

PIF still need to spend within their means.

That is difficult to do, particularly when Premier League clubs are generally in a position to demand large fees for their players because of the financial strength of the division.

However, it has to be better than last summer. Newcastle have money to spend and have largely spent the funds they’ve had to play with since the takeover very well.
