Newcastle United are facing a £5million blow following the latest updates surrounding star forward Alexander Isak.

The Sweden international has been a top performer for the north-east giants since making his club-record £63million move from Real Sociedad in 2022.

The 25-year-old registered 27 goals and six assists in 42 appearances in the 2024-25 season, helping his side finish fifth in the Premier League and win the Carabao Cup.

Isak has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool following his impressive performances on Tyneside.

The Times reported on 24 June Eddie Howe’s side are now prepared to make the forward, who is under contract until 2028, the best-paid player in the club’s history as they look to fight off any approach for his services.

The newspaper said Newcastle are ready to begin talks on a new deal that would take his salary beyond £150,000 a week.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider that would add an additional £5million to the club’s wages.

Newcastle’s wage bill jumped from £187million in 2022-23 to £219million in 2023-24, with that figure potentially set to increase following their Champions League qualification.

Newcastle could trigger £175m spending spree

Borson insisted Newcastle can likely spend around £175million this summer while they also look to agree new terms with Isak.

He told Football Insider: “They are talking about a new contract for Isak.

“That could easily be let’s say an additional £5million a year on top.

“They have also got Champions League wages you would think triggered.

“A number of players will have Champions League uplifts, so that again is more money.

“There is a limit to how much of that they can do just purely based on Champions League uplifts.

“So, I do think a kind of total package of £175million of spending feels like the most that they can do without player sales this summer.”

Newcastle get PSR boost after £72m reveal

Football Insider revealed on 26 June Newcastle have received a financial boost as a £72million loss has dropped out of their profit and sustainability (PSR) calculations.

The Tyneside club have struggled to comply with the PSR rules since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) secured its £305million takeover in October 2021.

Under PSR rules, Premier League sides are only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.
