Andy Robertson has been Liverpool’s starting left-back for the last few years and has rarely put a foot wrong.
The Scotsman has arguably been one of the best left-backs in the Premier League for the last few seasons, with his performances in the 2024-25 campaign taking a slight turn for the worse.
With this in mind, Milos Kerkez was brought in from Bournemouth to try and shore up Arne Slot’s defensive line after his breakout season for Bournemouth.
This has left Liverpool in a bit of a pickle as they now have three left-backs within their ranks, which means one will have to be sold.

Most expected Kostas Tsimikas to be the one moved on, but instead, Atletico Madrid turned their attention towards Robertson in their search for a new full-back.
However, that move broke down, so now the Reds find themselves in a dilemma once again.
Fabrizio Romano shares that Liverpool didn’t want to lose Andy Robertson on a free transfer
Robertson only has a year left on his current deal at Anfield, with a renewal not yet in sight.
The Scotsman is now 31 years old, so he’s only likely to have a couple of seasons left where he can perform at the top level.

Despite this, however, as per a new report from Fabrizio Romano via Caught Offside, it seems like Slot didn’t want to lose the left-back on a ‘free transfer.’
Romano outlines that while there was a ‘real possibility’ that the defender could’ve joined Atletico, the Reds didn’t want to lose him for nothing.
Diego Simeone was likely looking to pay a cut-rate price for the defender due to him only having a year left on his deal.
Now Liverpool face the problem of who to get rid of out of Tsimikas and Robertson, as they can’t keep three left-backs around for one position in the team, especially since they have no more non-homegrown spots left among their ranks.

Why this is likely going to be the end of the line for Kostas Tsimikas
Before the 2025-26 summer transfer window even opened, most Liverpool fans expected the Greek Scouser to be the one to exit Anfield.
The full-back has been Robertson’s backup for some time now, and although he seems fairly content being the number two, his performances last term weren’t all that great either.
Teams such as Juventus have already been linked with an interest in Tsimikas, and even though those talks have since died down, they’re likely to pick back up again soon.

The former Olympiakos player is still only 29 years old, so he has a fair few years of first-team football left in him.
However, as with any transfer, these things will take time and although Liverpool have invested in their ranks this summer, if they want to bring anyone else in, selling some of their players has to be the priority.
Of course, only time will tell what the future holds, but for now, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen.
