Report: Borussia Dortmund in race to sign£17m Chelsea defender who's'highly likely'to be loaned out

Borussia Dortmund are one of the clubs linked with a move to sign a Chelsea defender who’s played for them at this summer’s Club World Cup tournament.

Chelsea have conducted various pieces of transfer business with German giants Dortmund. For example, the Blues have loaned out Ian Maatsen and Carney Chukwuemeka to them in recent windows.

Also, Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens is now expected to join Chelsea in this summer window.

Borussia Dortmund in race for Aaron Anselmino

Aaron Anselmino, who joined Chelsea from Boca Juniors for £17m (The Athletic) in the summer of 2024, made his Blues debut in the recent Club World Cup victory against Benfica.

The 20-year-old defender is now tipped with a potential move away from Stamford Bridge this summer, though.

According to CaughtOffside, it is ‘highly likely’ that Chelsea will allow Anselmino to leave them this summer on a season-long loan.

It is explained that they want to accelerate the central defender’s development by giving him first-team minutes elsewhere.

The report says that Chelsea have explored the possibility of loaning Anselmino to sister club Strasbourg. In addition, Dortmund, Real Betis and Marseille are keen on signing the Argentine centre-half.

Betis have enquired about signing Anselmino as they look to offer him a year in La Liga.

Aaron Anselmino has worked hard behind the scenes

It’s been claimed that Anselmino has been bulking up in the gym to prepare himself for first-team demands at Chelsea.

Even though he’s had his first taste of senior football with the Blues at the Club World Cup, it makes sense for the young centre-back to leave on loan and continue his development at a different club. Afterwards, he may be in a much better position to compete for a starting role in West London.

Argentine legend Juan Roman Riquelme has tipped Anselmino for a massive future with his potential and quality. However, we suspect the fans may need to be patient with this profile, and a loan spell at a European club could be a sensible stepping stone.
