Ipswich Town lurk as Chelsea weigh up decision over £5m ace

Ipswich Town are among the clubs keen as Chelsea weigh up Marc Guiu’s future, according to The Athletic.

Ipswich Town are in the midst of a big transfer window after relegation to the Championship. ITFC were unable to extend their Premier League stay and will now fight tooth and nail to get back there.

The Tractor Boys will hope to strike some eye-catching deals but relegation means they must contend with the inevitability of losing key assets.

One to already move on is Liam Delap, who left for Chelsea. However, Town could now raid Stamford Bridge for his replacement.

As per The Athletic, Ipswich Town are keen on Spanish striker Marc Guiu this summer. Chelsea are set to make a decision over the 19-year-old’s future once their Club World Cup campaign comes to an end, and it is widely expected that he heads out on loan.

Reporter Alan Nixon stated over the weekend that the Premier League side are fielding loan enquires for Guiu, who was signed for £5m last summer.

ITFC are the only named admirer at this moment in time, but there are other clubs keeping a keen eye on his situation.

Ready for regular league football

Across his spells with Barcelona and Chelsea, Guiu has gained a respectable 23 appearances of senior experience. However, only six of those have come in league football.

A loan to the Championship with Ipswich Town would change that, giving him a chance to show his form in cup competitions can translate to the rugged and competitive nature of second tier football.

Guiu scored six goals in 16 games for Chelsea last season, all of which came in the UEFA Conference League. He will be eager to prove that form can continue against more competitive opposition in higher stakes games should he make a temporary move this summer.

Ipswich Town striker options

There’s no hiding that Ipswich Town have a big gap at the top of the pitch after Delap’s exit.

This was something that they will have expected though, so replacements should be firmly on the radar of the ITFC recruitment staff and club hierarchy already.

George Hirst and Ali Al-Hamadi will hope to stake claims for the starting birth in Kieran McKenna’s side, while the likes of versatile attackers Nathan Broadhead, Conor Chaplin and even Sammie Szmodics can be deployed as strikers and offer goal threat too.

A new striker is a must though, and time will tell if Guiu is the man for the job.
