Man Utd offered Jhon Duran before ‘transfer agreement struck for £340k-a-week striker’

Fenerbahce have struck an agreement with Al-Nassr to sign Jhon Duran on an initial season-long loan, according to reports. However, Manchester United are said to have been offered the opportunity to recruit the former Aston Villa striker before turning it down.

Duran has spent just half a season in Saudi Arabia after leaving Villa for Al-Nassr in a £65million deal in January, scoring 12 goals in 18 appearances. But, according to Fabrizio Romano, Fenerbahce will facilitate a quick return to European football after agreeing to cover the 21-year-old's full salary.

Jose Mourinho is adding Duran to his attacking ranks after Fenerbahce director Devin Ozek travelled to Colombia to settle on personal terms with the ex-Premier League star.

It is claimed that Duran will land in Istanbul with his agent today before completing his switch to the Turkish giants.

However, he could have secured an almost-instant return to England's top flight after United were offered the chance of a loan deal.

Romano reports that Duran was tabled to the Red Devils, who are searching for a striker signing after generating funds through player sales this summer.

But Old Trafford chiefs rejected the approach after learning the condition that they would have to cover the Colombia international's full salary.

Duran is believed to earn around £340,000 per week in Saudi Arabia, an eye-watering increase from his salary at Villa Park.

That would have blown United's recent efforts to stabilise their wage bill apart, making the youngster one of the club's top earners.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the M16 giants snubbed the opportunity, as much as an upgrade as Duran represents.

Amorim wants a new starting striker to replace Rasmus Hojlund, but must wait until United free up funds by offloading deadwood in his squad.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia are all in the shop window, but there has been limited interest in permanent moves.

For now, United are focused on completing the signing of Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo after seeing two bids, the latest worth £62.5m, rejected.

Matheus Cunha has already arrived to bolster Amorim's firepower, joining from Wolves in a £62.5m switch. But the Portuguese head coach is eyeing an entirely new-look front three.
