‘Very keen’: Gary Lineker thinks Alan Shearer will be buzzing after hearing who Newcastle are trying to sign

Newcastle United fans might currently be reeling from the disappointment of missing out on both Bryan Mbeumo and Joao Pedro.

Mbeumo and Pedro were two of Eddie Howe’s top targets at Newcastle this summer, and the club were in talks for both.

But as was the case with Mbeumo, Newcastle ultimately refused to match Pedro’s asking price, one that Chelsea are prepared to pay.

As a result, it’s back to the drawing board somewhat for Howe’s side, who are looking to make serious additions ahead of their return to the Champions League.

Newcastle have money to spend, they’re in a relatively healthy PSR stance right now, but the club are still wary of achieving value in the transfer market.

Gary Lineker thinks Alan Shearer will want Newcastle to sign Harvey Elliott

That being said, TBR Football recently revealed that Newcastle are stepping up their Harvey Elliott interest on the back of missing out on the names listed above.

Harvey Elliott is set to leave Liverpool this summer, something Gary Lineker just discussed on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast.

And whilst Alan Shearer didn’t feature on this episode, Lineker thought that the Newcastle legend would be delighted with talk of Harvey Elliott being targeted at St James’ Park.

Journalist Alex Aljoe started the chat, hailing Elliott’s efforts at the U21 Championships last month.

Aljoe said: “Yeah, and what a tournament for Harvey Elliott as well after such a disappointing season for him.

“Wearing the armband at the end and he only started what, two Premier League games for Liverpool, after they’d won the title. So I think it’s really frustrating for him, interesting to see what will happen, but a massive boost for him.

“I think he’s been linked to Newcastle, see what Alan thinks about that when he’s back, but yeah, brilliant, brilliant.”

Lineker replied: “I think Alan would be very keen on that. I think it’s an interesting decision for Harvey Elliott as well, isn’t it? Because they’ve obviously brought other players in as well.

“Florian Wirtz has come in, another kind of forward midfield player. Elliott, I mean, what a tournament he’s had.

“And if it’s not going to happen for him at Liverpool, I think there’ll be a host of clubs keen to sign him after that performance.”

Where would Harvey Elliott play for Newcastle?

Predominantly in Elliott’s career thus far, the 22-year-old has played as an attacking midfielder.

However, if Newcastle end up signing the former Fulham youngster, perhaps they would aim to play him more regularly in a right wing role.

Elliott has played out wide for Liverpool on occasion, and he actually enjoyed the highlight of his club season when substituting on for Mohamed Salah against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

And whilst Elliott is a different profile to the likes of Mbeumo, he could still be a huge success on Tyneside.

The Liverpool midfielder has that maverick-like quality that is adored at St James’ Park, and he could be a very clever pick-up for Howe.

Jacob Murphy needs help on the right, and Elliott would also be able to operate as a number 10 when needed, proving that he could definitely fulfil the positional role that Miguel Almiron used to play.
