Forget Eberechi Eze, Arsenal should sign £40m forward who is desperate to leave his club - opinion

In the club’s pursuit to improve the attacking options available to Mikel Arteta, Arsenal are now targeting Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze.

Eberechi Eze enjoyed another outstanding campaign for Crystal Palace last term, underlined by his goal against Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

In 43 appearances for Palace last season, predominantly as a number 10, Eze scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists.

Of course, that form is exactly why Arsenal are interested in Eze — Arteta has been lacking a maverick in attack, and the Palace man is exactly that.

But despite Eze’s supreme quality, he might not be the most sensible addition for Arsenal this summer.

Arsenal should sign Marcus Rashford instead of Eberechi Eze

Arsenal need to focus on two signings in attack this summer, sporting director Andrea Berta needs to sign a left winger and a new striker.

And although Eze is seriously talented, he doesn’t fit the bill for either.

Instead, Arsenal should actually consider reviving their interest in Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

Eze played only three games as a left winger for Palace last season and he isn’t a natural wide man who will hug the touchline in order for the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly to cut inside.

But in Rashford, who played 21 games on the left last season, Arsenal could sign a 27-year-old with a serious point to prove.

The United winger is available for £40m this summer, and although Rashford currently prefers a move to Barcelona, Arsenal would surely be able to change his mind.

Eze is arguably a better player than Rashford right now, explaining why he’s in the England squad ahead of the former Aston Villa loanee.

But Rashford is stylistically just what Arsenal need, a right footed left winger who is able to stay wide or play centrally when needed.

Arsenal could be the perfect fit for Marcus Rashford

Of course, any move to take Rashford to Arsenal from Old Trafford wouldn’t be easy for several reasons.

Firstly, Rashford is on huge wages at United, so some kind of compromise would need to be found between the two clubs, be it through a loan or permanent move.

And secondly, Rashford would be opening himself up to a new level of scrutiny at Arsenal, similar to what Kai Havertz has experienced.

Rashford’s every move has been critiqued over the last five years or so in England, and that might be why the forward prefers a move abroad.

However, playing under Arteta could be the perfect fit for Rashford, who wants to compete for titles at his next club.

Eze would be a superb luxury signing for Arsenal, a player who could replace both Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard on occasion.

But when it comes to fixing Arsenal’s attack, Rashford could be an understated solution.
