Washington Commanders wide receiver Deebo Samuel made news this offseason after he appeared bigger and slower during OTAs than he did with the San Francisco 49ers last season. His appearance did not go unnoticed, with two former Eagles commenting on his condition at a celebrity event this weekend.
Popular video game streamer JankyRondo posted a livestream on Twitch Saturday during Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith’s celebrity softball game at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Rondo, a Washington Commanders fan, interviewed several players.
The first mention of Samuel’s weight came when JankyRondo spoke with Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert and former defensive end Brandon Graham, asking them why they dominate the Commanders.
“We like winning over in Philly,” Goedert said. “You guys did have one game in Week 15 when it didn’t matter. Y’all were hyped for that game.”
After Goedert left, Graham stayed and continued speaking to JankyRondo, who mentioned that the Commanders acquired Samuel in a trade with the 49ers this offseason. Graham paused and shifted his focus from discussing how the Commanders could be a tough team to making fun of Samuel.
“I wouldn’t worry about him,” Graham said while grinning. “He’s got to get in shape first. He doesn’t look like he’s in shape right now.”
Graham continued by saying he enjoyed making jokes like that now that he’s retired.
“I have to have my fun right now while I can because when you are playing, you can’t say anything like that,” Graham said.
Graham was not the only person to take a shot at Samuel. Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens said the 49ers misused Samuel during his time there but that he should be better in Washington. He also mentioned that Samuel looked heavier since last season.
“He is fat,” Owens said. “He’s about two chicken nuggets from tipping the scale. But Deebo is my guy, though. I love Deebo. We had a conversation, and he knows what the deal is. I guarantee that by the time the season starts, he’ll be in tip-top shape.”
