“Ridiculous and unrealistic” – Manager slams Aston Villa rumour, would be “hypocritical”

NAC Breda coach Carl Hoefkens has labelled rumours he could join Aston Villa as an assistant manager as “ridiculous and unrealistic”.

[Voetbal Primeur cover comments](https://www.voetbalprimeur.nl/nieuws/1309178/hoefkens-ontkent-aston-villa-geruchtt-hypocriet-om-na-n-jaar-te-gaan.html) from the 46-year-old coach today in which he completely dismisses suggestions he’s on the way to Aston Villa.

Reports had suggested that he could be on the way to Aston Villa this summer to join Unai Emery’s backroom staff.

The move would be a surprising one given he was only appointed at NAC Breda in July last year. Furthermore, he has not been an assistant manager since 2019, when he was at Club Brugge.

Since then, he’s been manager at the Belgian club and then Standard Liege, before joining Breda last year and keeping them up last season with a 15th placed finish, seven points outside of the bottom three.

The project is going well as far as he’s concerned and it seems he has no intention of stepping away just yet, particularly to swap being a manager in his own right for an assistant role under Emery at Aston Villa, even if some would consider that a step up.

_“Ridiculous and unrealistic,”_ he said about the rumour when asked about it by BN De Stem.

_“I find it hypocritical if I deliberately choose a project, and the project is succeeding, and then say after one year that I’m leaving. I like continuity and projects like this. I don’t listen to anything else.”_
