How Real Madrid Have Lined Up Recently
Thibaut Courtois has started every match of the tournament so far. Dean Huijsen has also been ever-present in the heart of defence. Antonio Rudiger returned from injury to replace Raul Asencio with Aurelien Tchouameni also filling in as a centre-back as part of a back three against Salzburg. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fran Garcia were trusted as full-backs and then as wing-backs.

Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde have been starting in midfield as part of the trio. They were initially playing with Tchouameni but Arda Guler came in recently, Brahim Diaz has also been used during the tournament.
Initially, the front three was Vini Jr., Rodrygo, and Gonzalo Garcia, but Rodrygo has since been dropped. He was initially replaced in the trio but it has since become a front two with just Garcia and Vini following a formation shift.

After starting the tournament using a 4-3-3 to mixed effects, Alonso put his usual 3-5-2 in place for the clash with Salzburg and walked away with a 3-0 win. The players haven’t adjusted to life under the coach yet and injuries to key players has slowed the adjustment somewhat.

Performances have been interesting, on paper they’re undefeated but they haven’t had much control and are giving up chances. They’ve also been unreasonably clinical, scoring with the majority of their shots on target so far. What Los Blancos have pulled off may not be sustainable as they reach crunch time in the competition.

The manager is contending with a lack of options in defence and up front due to injuries. Endrick is sidelined with muscular issues while Kylian Mbappe fell ill before the tournament and has yet to return. In the back line, Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal’s veteran presence is missed as is the flexibility offered by David Alaba and Ferland Mendy. Eduardo Camavinga has so far missed every outing of the tournament while Raul Asencio is serving a suspension.
