Chelsea are considering whether to loan out Tyrique George ahead of next season, according to reports.

Writing in The Athletic‘s Transfer DealSheet column, reporter Simon Johnson said that the Blues want to ensure he gets enough game time, so they are willing to let him leave Stamford Bridge on a temporary basis. However, fans on X are not pleased about this latest development:

Why did we sign Gittens

Loaning him is not a good idea I think we should keep him

And this ends the Chelsea story of Tyrique George🤦🏾‍♂️

I can’t recall any loaned player that came back to form an integral part of our team in this new dispensation

No pathway for our academy players to the team. We seriously need to stop all this unnecessary buying of players.

I could see him getting sold.

The pure profit will be tempting for the owners.

And it supports their innovative model.

Maresca is a big fan of George

It is somewhat surprising that the club are willing to sanction the 19-year-old’s departure, even on loan. Head coach Enzo Maresca has praised the player in recent months. Speaking back in May after the 1-0 win over Manchester United, the Italian said:

“Very good. Very good. Brave. He was a threat in behind. Not easy for him because on the other side, you have Maguire, you have Lindelof, you have Shaw. He was fighting against important defenders. But again, we tried to find a solution with a player from the academy.”

George made 24 appearances last season (excluding the Club World Cup), scoring 2 goals and providing 5 assists.

Chelsea’s treatment of youth players

The arrival of Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro means that there will be very little space for George to play in his favoured position on the left wing.

It does demonstrate once again, though, the Blues’ hierarchy’s preference for signing young players from outside the club rather than trusting those who have come through the academy.

The fact that Trevoh Chalobah was frozen out last summer before being loaned out to Crystal Palace, and then brought back in January, demonstrates how little regard the club have for players developed at Cobham. Hopefully, George gets better treatment.
