Seven months after celebrity chef and ex-NFL player was shot, an arrest

First came the gunshots. Too fast and numerous to count. Then, the screams and the pleading.

“Please don’t kill me, bro, please don’t kill me,” acclaimed chef and former NFL player Tobias Dorzon can be heard saying on a video that captured the gunfire and robbery that injured him and the woman who accompanied him for dinner in Maryland last November. “You can have it all.”

Another video of the shooting shows four people in dark pants, hoodies and partial face coverings surrounding Dorzon as he’s lying prostrate on that November night in Hyattsville, Maryland. A white SUV was nearby with a possible getaway driver. It sped away after the shooting.

For months, authorities have searched for five suspects. On Friday, seven months after the shooting, one was arrested.

Devin Spivey, 21, was apprehended after the execution of a search and arrest warrant, Hyattsville Police Chief Jarod Towers told reporters Monday outside the Prince George’s County courthouse.

Spivey, who faces 18 charges, including attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault, was denied bail Monday by a judge for his alleged involvement in a shooting with a “horrifying … set of facts,” interim state attorney Tara H. Jackson said Monday with Towers at her side.

“We’re pleased that [Spivey] was held without bond,” Jackson said. “We look forward to continuing with the prosecution of this case.”

Dorzon, who owns the restaurants Huncho House and 1123 in Prince George’s County, could not be reached for comment.

In an Instagram story posted around the time of Spivey’s bail hearing Monday, Dorzon captured a Bible verse that instructs believers to do away with their worries and to place their asks before God to protect their peace.

Dorzon has chronicled some of his recovery on social media, sharing videos of himself doing physical therapy and rehab and showing scars caused by the shooting.

Towers did not divulge the details of Spivey’s arrest to reporters because the case is ongoing.

“This is a huge step forward in arresting and charging one of five suspects,” Towers said. “This is another example, another opportunity for us to show the community what partnerships can do.”

Towers said the four other suspects will be “brought forward at some point” but declined to comment about whether authorities already knew their identities.

In 2024, Dorzon became the first Prince George’s County chef to be awarded chef of the year by the Restaurant Association of Maryland, according to a statement from the Prince George’s County Council.

Last May, the council honored Dorzon with a proclamation. The council’s statement highlighted his role as a former NFL player and his appearances on several Food Network shows including “Chopped,” “Tournament of Champions” and “Guy’s Grocery Games.” Dorzon also hosts “Timeout With Tobias,” which can be seen on ESPN+ and Hulu.

Jackson said Dorzon’s profile has attracted interest in the case, but she assured residents that all cases of violence are important to her office.
