Callum Wilson spotted in new role on day his Newcastle United contract expires

Newcastle United are yet to release a statement regarding Callum Wilson’s future.

Newcastle announced on June 6 that discussions were ongoing with Wilson and his representatives, and that a new deal could still be agreed. But that was the club’s last update.

Callum Wilson’s Newcastle United contract expires

With an official announcement still awaited, right now it is assumed the 33-year-old is no longer a Newcastle United player and is instead a free agent. June 30 was the last day of his current deal, and he spent it on punditry duty for DAZN.

Alongside the likes of former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given and ex-Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, Wilson has been covering the Club World Cup. While the competition is taking place in America, DAZN has a UK studio, which Wilson and the others have been attending.

As the clock ticked into July 1, Wilson was on duty as Manchester City missed out on a place in the quarter-finals following a 4-3 extra-time defeat to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.

Newcastle United set to release Callum Wilson statement

Wilson appeared to bid farewell to Newcastle fans after the final game of last season against Everton but head coach Eddie Howe didn’t rule out the striker staying.

Despite no announcement yet, clarity regarding Wilson’s future is expected to arrive very soon.

Wilson has scored 49 goals in 130 appearances since joining from AFC Bournemouth in 2020 but endured a frustrating 2024-25 campaign with injuries, which restricted him to just three starts. His only goal came in the FA Cup fourth round win away to Birmingham City, while his last Premier League goal was over a year ago in May 2024.

Wilson’s limited appearances meant he did not automatically trigger a one-year extension. United also passed up the option, instead entering talks over an incentive-based contract.

Eddie Howe on Callum Wilson’s future

“Really professional, brave. To come here and be the number nine in the manner and the moment that he did in the club's history, it was a difficult moment. The club needed hope and Callum gave them hope. He led the line with that responsibility and the pressure that that role brings unbelievably well. He brings a positivity to the group.

“He's a leader within the changing room. He's just been incredible and let's wait and see what happens. It was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters. There's still so much respect there between the two.”

Howe added: “Obviously I've got a very close relationship with him, as I'd like to think I have with, I won't say all, because that's impossible, but the majority of the players in the squad, I think it's really important that I do.

“But he's someone I just respect immensely. I've seen the struggles that he's had in his career. I've also seen the successes. I've seen the development. He's never someone you'd want to lose from the group.

“But obviously, there's challenges that we face as a football club. Financial challenges with PSR, with a whole host of different decisions to make. And that's why I said, let's wait and see what happens.”
