Man United yet to approach‘physically strong’ German midfielder amid transfer links

Manchester United’s poor midfield was one reason they struggled in the Premier League last season.

The club want to bolster the department but need player sales to do so, as they have prioritised strengthening the attack with their transfer budget.

Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha is one of the midfielders linked with the Mancunian giants.

The Athletic reports that United have yet to contact his representatives about a move to Old Trafford.

Dortmund are also not open to selling Nmecha, potentially making it difficult for United to negotiate with the German side for the midfielder.

Described as ‘physically strong’ by Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl, the Germany international was a regular in Dortmund’s starting line-up last season.

He made 39 appearances across all competitions, registering six goals and three assists – an impressive tally for a deep-lying midfielder.

Nmecha has started all but one game for Dortmund in the Club World Cup, underscoring his importance for the five-time German champions.

The 24-year-old is a central midfielder but can also play as a defensive midfielder. He would be a good fit for manager Ruben Amorim’s two-man midfield.

However, getting Nmecha’s signature would be financially challenging for United at the moment.

With Dortmund’s resistance to selling the Manchester City academy product, Man United would have to pay a significant fee to convince the German side to part ways with him.

United are already poised to commit another significant part of their summer budget to sealing a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, and then shift attention towards signing a striker.

They would only be able to pay a considerable fee for Nmecha if they sell Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Marcus Rashford – their most prized assets.

United could also move for Atalanta’s Ederson or Crystal Palace youngster Adam Wharton if they can boost their budget with incoming transfer fees.
