WNBA Announces Major Expansion with New Teams in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia

The WNBA has unveiled a significant expansion, adding three new franchises in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia, bringing the league’s total to 18 teams. Pending approval from the WNBA and NBA Boards of Governors, the move marks a significant step in the league’s mission to grow the game and extend its reach to new markets.

The expansion follows the debut of the Golden State Valkyries in May 2025 and precedes the introduction of new franchises in Toronto and Portland in 2026. The Cleveland team is set to begin play in 2028, followed by Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030.

“The demand for women’s basketball has never been higher,” said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. “This historic expansion reflects the momentum of our league and the deep talent in the game today. These new teams will energize local fanbases and reshape the future of women’s basketball.”

In Cleveland, the WNBA returns under Rock Entertainment Group, led by Dan Gilbert. The city previously hosted the Cleveland Rockers from 1997 to 2003. Gilbert’s sports empire also includes the NBA’s Cavaliers and the G League’s Cleveland Charge.

Detroit welcomes back the WNBA with a team led by Pistons owner Tom Gores. The former Detroit Shock won three WNBA titles between 2003 and 2006, drawing record-breaking crowds. Gores plans to build on that legacy with a diverse ownership group and a focus on community investment.

Philadelphia joins the league with backing from Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, the group behind the NBA’s 76ers. HBSE Managing Partner Josh Harris called the move “a new era of Philadelphia basketball,” and praised local and state leaders for their support in bringing the WNBA to a region rich in basketball history.

The league selected each city based on strong ownership, facilities, community engagement, and long-term growth potential. Engelbert thanked the new owners for their commitment and called the expansion a defining moment for women’s sports.

With continued surging interest, record attendance, and increasing visibility, the WNBA’s bold expansion signals an even brighter future. Fans can learn more at wnbacleveland.com, wnba.com/detroit, and wnba.com/philadelphia.
