“So don’t forget about”: Fabrizio Romano drops update on £70m star LFC are negotiating to sell

Liverpool have blown fans away this summer with their transfer work so far but if they want to continue with their lavish spending, they require high ticket sales to do so.

The £116m deal to sign Florian Wirtz came as a massive surprise but in acquiring the German, FSG have guaranteed that Liverpool will be one of the most exciting teams in Europe this season.

Meanwhile, Arne Slot has signed Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez to upgrade his options at fullback and to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman have joined the club to reinforce goalkeeper depth after Caoimhin Kelleher joined Brentford. 19-year-old Hungarian showstopper Armin Pecsi has also been recruited.

But now Liverpool need to make sure they recoup enough money from sales this summer if they want to continue spending big.

Darwin Nunez likely to be the first big sale of Liverpool’s record-setting summer window

Fabrizio Romano reports that although there may still be a lot more to come from Liverpool in terms of new signings, it is still very important for the Reds to complete sales to decrease the overall cost of their summer activity.

Reports suggest that Liverpool have already broken the £200m mark this summerLiverpool have already broken the £200m mark this summer and with transfer talk involving Alexander Isak still circulating, FSG will need to be very careful with their spending to make sure there aren’t any PSR repercussions.

“There could be many signings for Liverpool this summer, but also for Liverpool the situation is very clear – they also need some outgoings,” Fabrizio Romano writes for Caught Offside.

“So don’t forget about the situation of Darwin Nunez, because there is interest from Napoli, but at the moment no agreement between club to club on the transfer fee.

“There is still a gap between Liverpool and Napoli and this is a significant gap as of today on the valuation of the player.

“Then let’s see what happens with more clubs in Europe and also in Saudi, who are also interested, because Darwin Nunez will be for sure one to watch in this summer’s transfer window.”

Are Liverpool being realistic when it comes to Nunez?

I have been made to eat my words when it comes to Liverpool transfer sales over the years. Michael Edwards has routinely extracted borderline shocking fees for some of the players sold by FSG over the years.

Selling Rhian Brewster for £23.5m in 2020 after the striker only played four competitive matches for the senior team springs to mind.

But £70m for Nunez? That seems crazy.

The club paid £64m to sign him in 2022 but he has since proven to the world he is not worth that kind fo investment.

That said, Liverpool rejected offers worth £70m from the Saudi Pro League in January, preferring to keep him in their bid to win the Premier League title.

According to Graeme Bailey at TBR Football: “Liverpool have made it clear that they want to recoup at least £70m from the sale of Darwin Nunez. The Reds have already held talks with the Saudi Pro League about Nunez and they indicated that they would be prepared to pay a substantial fee…”
