Report: Arsenal now plot surprise move for 'dominant' Liverpool ace as Mikel Arteta makes him a 'target'

Liverpool have dominated the transfer headlines this summer with the Reds breaking their club-record fee to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

Alongside Wirtz, others such as Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have also been welcomed through the Anfield doors.

However, with all of these new players getting brought in, there are bound to be some sales with both Caoimhin Kelleher and Nat Phillips already being shown the exit door.

Several Liverpool players, such as Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott, have also been linked with a move away recently, but it’s another player who has caught the eye of Mikel Arteta.

Mikel Arteta is eyeing a surprise move for Liverpool’s Tyler Morton

With Wataru Endo confirming that he’s set to stay at Liverpool next season, it feels highly unlikely that anyone other than the Japan international and Ryan Gravenberch will get a look-in for the defensive midfield position.

Slot played a very similar team for each game Liverpool played last term, and rarely changed things up.

This resulted in youngsters such as Tyler Morton receiving no playing time whatsoever, despite the solid performances he put in for Hull during the 2023-24 campaign.

With this in mind, it hardly comes as a surprise to see the Englishman getting linked with a move away.

What is surprising, however, is that Arteta has made Morton a ‘target’ for Arsenal.

That is, according to a report from Portuguese outlet O Jogo, who outline that Braga are another team interested in acquiring his services.

Thomas Partey has now left the Emirates upon the expiry of his contract, and although Martin Zubimendi is set to come in, it seems like Arteta is looking to sign Morton to provide further cover.

Tyler Morton should be allowed to leave Liverpool

As Morton is now 22 years old and has some experience under his belt, it now feels like the right time for him to jump ship and kickstart his career.

Indeed, a loan move would allow him to develop further and allow Liverpool to retain him, but with the way things are headed, it feels unlikely that there will be room for Morton to make it into Slot’s first-team squad anytime soon.

That is, especially with the likes of Stefan Bajcetic and James McConnell still within the Reds’ ranks.

McConnell is slightly younger than Morton, but the fact that it’s been reported that Slot wants to give the midfielder a chance in pre-season proves that he’s more likely to have a future at Liverpool than his teammate.

Of course, only time will tell what the future holds, but for now, Morton seems more likely to exit this summer than he is to stay.

That is, even if Jurgen Klopp did laud him as a “dominant” player during his time with Hull.
