The reason for this sudden surge is simple — it’s 1 July, the official start of the new football contract year.

Across Europe and beyond, this date marks the point when player contracts expire and new deals formally kick in, meaning that a flood of moves, announcements, and unveilings involving out-of-contract players and previously agreed transfers can now be finalised and publicly confirmed.

Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation with Andre Onana has come under the spotlight as speculation around his future persists.

And from one goalkeeper to another.

Nathan Bishop is a familiar name to those who followed United’s goalkeeper ranks closely over the past few seasons.

The 25-year-old’s career has taken him from Old Trafford to the North East, and now to London, as he embarks on a fresh challenge with a club that’s climbing steadily up the EFL ladder.

AFC Wimbledon have confirmed, via the official club website, the signing of former Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop from Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old has penned a three-year contract with the newly-promoted League One outfit.

Nathan Bishop, who originally joined United from Southend United in 2020, featured regularly for the club’s U23 side and was often named in senior matchday squads, although he didn’t make a first-team appearance.

He gained valuable first-team experience during a loan spell at Mansfield Town before moving permanently to Sunderland last summer.

During his stint with the Black Cats, Bishop made two senior appearances and also spent time on loan at Cambridge United, where he continued to develop his game.

With AFC Wimbledon’s previous number one Owen Goodman returning to Crystal Palace following his loan spell, the Dons have moved swiftly to secure Bishop as their new shot-stopper.

Speaking to Wimbledon’s official website, Bishop said: “The manager, Bayzo [goalkeeper coach Ashley Bayes], the staff and players were a massive part of me joining this fantastic club.

“Then I heard about the fans – I am delighted to be here and cannot wait to give everything to the people who built this place brick by brick.”

Dons manager Johnnie Jackson also expressed his excitement at the signing, saying: “We are really pleased to get a goalkeeper of such quality with real experience, he’s played for some big clubs so we know exactly what we are getting and as always Bayzo will get the best out of him.

“We are really happy with Nathan and Joe and the goalkeeping department we now have here.”

Bishop’s journey is another example of how United’s influence extends far beyond the Premier League.
