League One Exeter City are leading the race to land Crystal Palace goalkeeper Joe Whitworth on loan for a second successive season, the News Shopper understands.

The 21-year-old spent last season with the Grecians, keeping 16 clean sheets in 51 appearances (all competitions).

Despite interest from several clubs in League One, Exeter have emerged as the frontrunners to secure Whitworth’s services for another season.

Whitworth, whose Palace contract runs until 2027, emerged as a fan favourite during his stint at Exeter, claiming the Supporters’ Player of the Season.

A return to Devonshire would reunite Whitworth with goalkeeper coach Kevin Miller, who played 66 times for Palace between 1997 and 1999.

Whitworth, a lifelong Palace fan, is the youngest goalkeeper to have played in the Premier League, featuring twice for the Eagles in March 2023 at the age of 19.

Following Remi Matthews’ new deal and the signing of Argentine Walter Benitez, Palace will allow Whitworth and fellow shot-stopper Owen Goodman to leave on loan.

Goodman, who made League Two’s Team of the Season last term, is closing in on a move to Huddersfield Town for his third spell away from the club.
