After an extended break away from football, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has returned. The Frenchman – who last played in September 2023, for Juventus against Empoli – has signed for AS Monaco and the disparity between his current wages and what he earned in England is eye-catching.
A player who seriously divides opinion among the Old Trafford faithful is Pogba: on the one hand, he was supremely talented; but it was his inconsistency which was the point of his troubles. He was re-sold to Juventus six years after his return.
Pogba, now 32 years of age and ready to regain a spot in Didier Deschamps’ plans ahead of the 2026 World Cup, has joined Monaco, taking the No.8 shirt in the process. But what is he earning in his homeland compared to what he lined his pockets with during his second spell in the Premier League?

Frenchman set to play in Ligue 1 for first time in his career
Pogba, whose 2016 arrival remains Manchester United’s biggest-ever outlay, won the Europa League in his first season back in England – but that was as good as it got. Having plundered 39 goals and 51 assists in 233 outings, he returned to Juventus in 2022 on a free transfer, but his stay was short.
If you’re unaware, Pogba – a 91-cap France international – had been banned after failing a drugs test and, thus, agreed a mutual termination of his contract with the Bianconeri. The Carrington graduate’s initial four-year ban was then reduced to 18 months.

'I Played 42 Times With Paul Pogba – This is Why he Flopped at Man United'
An ex-teammate, who played 42 times with Paul Pogba, explained why the French midfielder flopped at Man United.
Despite a third stint at the Theatre of Dreams being in the offing in February, Pogba – a player widely regarded as one of the greatest central midfielders since 1990 – is set to play in Ligue 1 for the first time in his career for Adolf Hutter’s Monaco.
But what’s his salary? Per French publication L’Equipe, the central midfielder has put pen to paper on a two-year deal worth €3.84 million per year, which is a significant drop-off to the cash he was earning during his hodgepodge time at Old Trafford.
Reports suggested the now-32-year-old wanted an ever more lucrative contract to extend his spell and that the club's higher-ups were considering whether just coughing up to his demands made more sense than losing him on a free once more. Alas, they didn't.

As reported by Business Insider, he was pocketing €17.6 million on a yearly basis in 2021/22 – a nothing short of tricky campaign which saw him start 27 games, and amass ten goal involvements, for the Premier League heavyweights in all competitions.
A record signing for Manchester United, having Pogba back in football is certainly a good thing; whether he can return to his best, to his days bossing engine rooms around Europe, remains to be seen. His first competitive outing for the French side will be, on home soil, against Le Havre on August 17.
