Steelers see shades of Pittsburgh legend in Jalen Ramsey after trade

The Pittsburgh Steelers want to use Jalen Ramsey all over the football field after acquiring him from the Miami Dolphins.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers see ‘shades of Rod Woodson’ in Ramsey, which is part of the reason they acquired the star safety in the first place.

“This is a case-by-case situation where a player like Jalen Ramsey happened to be available where they feel like he gives them more flexibility than what they had with Minkah Fitzpatrick,” Fowler said on Get Up. “He can play slot cornerback, can play safety, if you need him to do that. They see shades of Rod Woodson.”

Woodson was one of those players who switched from cornerback to safety late in his career and became one of the best safeties in football after doing that. That did not happen with the Steelers, though, as Woodson left for the Baltimore Ravens.

In the past, Ramsey has said that he would move to safety later in his career if asked and believes that he can thrive defensively in that role.

“I wouldn’t have any problems moving to safety,” Ramsey said back in 2021.

Ramsey now enters his age-31 season, but the Steelers will likely use him as a chess piece who plays safety, slot cornerback, and outside cornerback whenever asked by the team.

That versatility will allow the Steelers to have Joey Porter Jr., Darius Slay, and Ramsey all on the field simultaneously in a way they could not execute beforehand.
