It was a BIG Monday in Pittsburgh. The week got off to a wild start in Western Pa. when news broke that the Steelers had traded for star Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith in exchange for five-time Pro Bowl safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (who the Steelers acquired from the Dolphins back in 2019). Later in the afternoon, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter kept the onslaught coming, reporting that trade inquiries for T.J. Watt, one of the most devasting defensive forces in the NFL, were intensifying as the disgruntled pass rusher continued his holdout.
As if that weren’t enough, Schefter joined ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ for a live segment while in the middle of a star-studded round at Oakmont, the site of last month’s U.S. Open. During the interview, Neal Shipley, playing in Schefter’s group, popped his head in to say what’s up to McAfee and the boys, and the segment quickly veered off the rails, with McAfee and Shipley discussing how McAfee, a Pittsburgh native, could go about becoming an member at the venerated club. If that sounds chaotic to you, well, just watch.
First of all, let us just say that seeing an Ohio State kid and a Michigan man sharing the same foursome in harmony give us some hope for the future of humanity. As for the prospects of a McAfee Oakmont membership, those seem pretty optimistic as well. McAfee raises the topic, and it sounds like Shipley says, “give me a call,” and Schefter says, “we gotta get that done, we’re going to work on that, Pat!” When Schefter revealed he was staying at Oakmont, McAfee revealed even more humble ambitions ... at least to start.
“See, that’s what I’m talking about,” McAfee said. “I don’t need to become a member … I’ve never even been there!”
We’ll see what sort of magic the offices of Shipley & Schefty can work out, but from the sound of things, we expect McAfee to pop his Oakmont cherry before the summer is through.
