Lions become big part of successful push for WNBA team in Detroit

Detroit is about to get another great addition to its sports lexicon.

The city was announced as one of three that have landed a new WNBA franchise, revitalizing a dormant part to Detroit's basketball fandom that has been that way since the Shock became the Tulsa Shock in 2009, which then became the now-existent Dallas Wings.

Lions fans would be pleased to know that several members of the Lions organization ended up being instrumental to the investment in bringing back a WNBA franchise to the city, which will be starting up in 2029. As of now, the next few franchises to start up in the WNBA are the Toronto Tempo, a Portland franchise, a Cleveland franchise in 2028, Detroit, then a Philadelphia franchise in 2030.

It's cool to see Goff invest in Detroit in this way. An already intense sports city is gaining a new organization to root for, and that's [due in some part](https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nba/pistons/2025/06/30/detroit-wnba-expansion-team-return-2029-season/84410206007/) to the Lions by way of Goff and team owner Sheila Hamp.

“We have brought together an impressive array of investors who reflect the strength and diversity of Detroit. I’m excited about what we can accomplish together to advance women’s professional sports and inspire a new generation of fans. I’m grateful to our exceptional investor group, Commissioner Engelbert, and the WNBA for their trust in our vision and commitment to the people of Detroit," said Pistons owner Tom Gores about the group of investors bringing the new team to life.

Goff is obviously looking to be a long standing Detroit sports fixture with this sort of involvement with the city's WNBA franchise. He's signed to a pretty lucrative deal with the Lions currently - signed through 2028 on a four year, $134 million extension - and will be 33 by the time that runs out.

Assuming Detroit is able to at least make a Super Bowl in his tenure, he'll be seen as one of Detroit sports' greatest success stories and is likely to remain with the team for his career. So, it makes sense that he'd get even more entrenched in the city with this sort of investment.

Goff is destined to be a sideline fixture at future Detroit WNBA games. Hopefully, another fixture the team can get into place is their original name - the Shock.
