Manchester United want to snap-up Bryan Mbeumo this summer.
An update has been provided on this summer's biggest transfer saga involving Manchester United and Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo.
United return to training in the week beginning July 7 - having already signed one new player. United triggered the £62.5 million release clause in Matheus Cunha's contract last month, bringing the Wolves forward to Old Trafford on a five-year deal, with an option for an additional 12 months.
United's pre-season campaign kicks off against Leeds United in Stockholm on July 19. Shortly after their journey to Sweden, the club then fly to the United States to take part in the Premier League Summer Series - where they will face West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton.
There is hope at Old Trafford that Mbeumo will be able to join his potential new teammates ahead of a crucial pre-season for Ruben Amorim's squad. The Manchester Evening News understands that United submitted an improved bid in excess of £60m for the Cameroon international. The Reds' initial £55million offer was rejected, with Brentford said to be aiming for around £63m.
Fabrizio Romano has now reported his understanding of the situation in his latest newsletter for GiveMeSport.
When asked if this will be the decisive week for United - and Mbeumo - he replied "Can be for sure. Contacts will continue and Man United remain optimistic, after new contacts also on Sunday."
Former manager Thomas Frank, now in charge at Tottenham Hotspur, who are also understood to be interested in Mbeumo, warned in May that Mbeumo's sale would need to be for a substantial fee.
"It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount," he said. "It is a lot. Mucho. Really a lot. Then it is clear that it is impossible to replace him one for one. It cannot be done.
"There is a reason why he costs x number of million pounds, and we do not have x number of million pounds to buy for."
