Commanders Owner Josh Harris Proves He’s A Buyer With Major Announcement

It hasn't even been two years since Josh Harris bought the Washington Commanders, and yet he's already back in the game to purchase another sports franchise.

This time, he's buying a team in the WNBA.

The NBA and the "W" both announced that the city of Philadelphia would be awarded an expansion franchise beginning in 2030. The owner of that team? The same one who owns the Philadelphia 76ers.

Harris.

"Philadelphia is one of the most storied basketball cities in the world, and our region is home to some of the best women's players and coaches to ever grace the hardwood. It's only right that this city gets the WNBA team it deserves, and we're humbled to help usher in a new era of Philadelphia basketball," Harris said in a statement.

This is the fourth professional sports that will be led by Harris with a majority ownership. The New Jersey Devils, 76ers, Commanders, and this new WNBA team are part of that portfolio.

Harris also bought a minority share in the Crystal Palace Football Club of the Premier League over the last few weeks.

Many NFL owners have the majority control over additional sports franchises. Harris's push for the WNBA shows that he continues to try to diversify his own standing in the industry.

The WNBA has seen an increase in popularity over the last few years and is a league subsidized by the NBA. Harris' desire to control the franchise in Philly shows that he is buying into the increased marketing power and money-making power of the WNBA.

Josh Harris is, in short, a “buyer.”
