It’s a tale that has affected plenty of academy graduates who once looked destined to become Old Trafford regulars, only to see their careers take a different path.
Axel Tuanzebe is a recent example.
Once tipped to be a stalwart at the back for United, the centre-back was sent on a series of loans before recently signing for Burnley, where he’s going to be playing at a level that suits him more consistently.
Another name that left Carrington with high hopes is Ethan Galbraith, who came through the ranks as a central midfielder in United’s academy.
The 24-year-old has impressed in multiple roles since joining Leyton Orient in 2023.
Galbraith scored the decisive penalty that sent Leyton Orient into the League One Play-Off final last season.

Now, according to Football League World’s report, Swansea City have moved into pole position to sign the 24-year-old Northern Ireland international this summer.
The Swans, who’ve already made four new signings under Alan Sheehan, are determined to continue strengthening and view Galbraith as a key midfield target.
He notched six goals and eight assists in 51 appearances last season, also filling in at right-back with confidence – his versatility being noticed by potential suitors.
Charlton had an initial £1.5m bid rejected as highlighted last week.
While Huddersfield were reportedly lining up an improved £2.5m offer, but Swansea have surged ahead in the race, five months on from their failed deadline day approach in February.
With just one year left on his contract, Galbraith’s future looks set to be decided soon – and Swansea are now firmly in the driving seat.
