It's almost a miracle that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has posted back-to-back career seasons since arriving in The Big Guava.
The Bucs will employ their fourth different offensive coordinator in the past four years when the 2025 NFL season kicks off in 68 days.
Byron Leftwich was let go after the 2022 season and was replaced by Dave Canales. Canales left after one year to become the head coach in Carolina, and was replaced by Liam Coen. Coen left after last year to take the head coaching job in Jacksonville. He'll be replaced by Josh Grizzard for the upcoming season.
For a team that thrives on continuity and stability, that seems unthinkable.
Yet, here we are.
And it's not predicted to get better after 2025, as Bleacher Report's Moe Moton thinks Grizzard will be the next to leave Tampa Bay after just one season as the offensive coordinator.
“Josh Grizzard could be the next Buccaneers offensive coordinator in line for a big opportunity elsewhere,” Moton wrote. “At 35, he’s younger than Canales, 44, and Coen, 39, but he’s been in the league since 2017, when he held an offensive quality control position with the Miami Dolphins. In Miami, Grizzard took on various roles under three different regimes, with head coaches Adam Gase, Brian Flores, and Mike McDaniel, which illustrates his value to coaching staffs.
"Last year in Tampa Bay, Grizzard served as the passing game coordinator. So, his familiarity with the passing attack could help him get the Buccaneers off to a quick offensive start despite his play-calling inexperience.”
Somehow, Mayfield has thrived under all of these changes, and the Bucs can only hope that trend continues for the quarterback.
