Newcastle United hint at Callum Wilson exit as fans await official confirmation from club

With today being the 1st of July, that means players with expiring contracts who didn't sign an extension are now free to leave their respective clubs, with Newcastle United fans awaiting news on No. 9's next steps.

Callum Wilson is one of the players whose contract expired yesterday,y and while there has been no confirmation from the club or the player at the time of writing, it seems inevitable that the £20 million former Bournemouth man will be leaving.

Wilson made 22 appearances last season for Newcastle, but only three of those were starts as the 33-year-old battled yet more injuries.

His lack of game time failed to trigger an automatic contract extension, and the club opted against extending his stay on his current terms. However, it was widely reported that Wilson had been offered an incentive-based deal to remain at St James' Park.

Callum Wilson 'released' by Newcastle

The Premier League website has Callum Wilson listed as 'released'

Now that his contract has expired, we are awaiting official confirmation from either the club or the player that he has indeed left, but the Premier League have dropped a pretty big hint.

Wilson, along with John Ruddy and Jamal Lewis, have been deemed as 'released' by the official Premier League website.

A report by The Shields Gazette has claimed that Wilson and Ruddy have been removed from Newcastle United's squad list, but they're both still there when we checked (6:30pm).

Leeds United are keen on Callum Wilson for next season

If indeed he has left the club as expected, Callum Wilson departs on 49 goals for the club having failed to make it to 50 last season, scoring only once in the FA Cup against Birmingham.

Injuries aside, Callum Wilson has been an outstanding player for the Magpies with a goals-per-game ratio that rivals any top striker. Unfortunately, he spent far too much time on the sidelines and started to swing more to the liability side of things than an asset.

Leeds United are reportedly interested in taking Callum Wilson on for next season and if he can stay fit, we're absolutely certain he can do a job for them as they bid to be the first promoted team to beat the drop in three seasons.
