The NFL tackles data infrastructure and AI deployment with NetApp

The National Football League, better known as the NFL, kicked off the summer by expanding its partnership with NetApp Inc.

As a massive and increasingly global organization, the NFL has to manage large amounts of data, and that’s whereNetApp’s intelligent data organization comes in clutch.

Cesar Cernuda, president of NetApp, and Gary Brantley, senior VP and CIO of the NFL, talk with theCUBE about the organization's global presence during NetApp's "Architecting Outcomes in the Era of Intelligence - 2025.

The NFL’s Gary Brantley and NetApp’s Cesar Cernuda talk with theCUBE about their organizations’ partnership.

“We throw big, massive events,” saidGary Brantley (pictured, left), senior vice president and chief information officer of the NFL. “Having a partner that can help us unlock what I would call our most prized possession, which is our data, is something that we really needed to focus on. Over the last several years, NetApp has earned that trust, and they’ve been a partner with us for close to 20 years. Now, we’re expanding that partnership.”

They discussed how NetApp’s data management tools support the NFL’s global presence.(* Disclosure below.)

The NFL sets big goals for AI

NetApp offers what it calls the 6 Nines Availability Guarantee, which translates to the uptime, or the percentage of time the system is available, being at 99.9999%. For the NFL, which balances multiple data sets at any given time, having a secure and accessible data infrastructure is crucial, according to Cernuda.

“We understand that the most important asset that our customers have is their data,” Cernuda said. “We say that we are the most secure data storage company on the planet. The reason for that is, we have brought out autonomous ransomware protection, as you well know, capabilities inside our technology that helps our customers to detect potential threats so they can stop very fast or act as soon as possible to them.”

The NFL has been using artificial intelligence for some time, but the organization plans to ramp up AI deployment in the coming years, according to Brantley. This includes supporting multiple viewing options for fans, such as theToy Story simulcast, and providing a customized experience for fans worldwide.

“[AI]’s been at the forefront of our strategy for a very long time,” Brantley said. “How great would it be for you to book a ticket to an international game, and for you to get an experience through our mobile platform on flights? An experience on, ‘Hey, what can I do here? What hotel should I stay at?’ Those are all areas from a business perspective that AI is really going to drive for us.”
