Viktor Gyokeres has long been the top striker target for Manchester United this summer.

Ruben Amorim has been eager to reunite with the Swedish international after their hugely successful spell together at Sporting CP.

Gyokeres has seen his career hit new heights since, evolving into one of Europe’s most prolific strikers and the perfect profile to lead the line at Old Trafford in the new era.

In 2023/24 season, he netted 43 goals and 14 assists in all competitions, followed by a staggering 54 goals and 12 assists in 52 games in 2024/25.

Before Amorim’s departure from Sporting in November, Gyokeres famously scored a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.

A performance that continued to push the vision of Gyokeres joining United, to smash the Premier League under Amorim.

However, United’s pursuit is far from straightforward.

Premier League rivals Arsenal are also desperate to bring in a top-class No.9 after their title bid fell short last season due in part to injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

Sporting Director Andrea Berta has been actively working behind the scenes to secure a marquee forward for Mikel Arteta – and he’s made Gyokeres the priority.

According to L’Équipe, Arsenal are now close to reaching a verbal agreement with Gyokeres’ agent Hasan Cetinkaya.

The striker is keen to link up with Arteta’s side.

The Gunners are reportedly aiming to finalise a deal worth just under €70 million.

Sporting CP have made it clear that any departure will be on their terms following Gyokeres’ astonishing 54-goal season in all competitions.

Arsenal had reportedly submitted their first bid to sign Gyokeres in mid-June, however an agreement was far from reached at the time.

Although, it seems like they may now finally have their man – who Arteta’s side have long been lacking.

As for the Red Devils, it serves as a huge blow should Gyokeres go on to sign for Arsenal.

Especially after recently missing out on Liam Delap to Chelsea.
