Everton fans may have to wait longer for the first summer transfer at Bramley-Moore Dock as talks continue for Villarreal striker Thierno Barry.

David Moyes has lost Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the Toffees, with the English centre-forward’s contract expiring.

The Blues are evidently in desperate need to bolster their attack ahead of next season as they hope to make further progress under the Scottish manager.

Barry’s arrival at the Hill Dickinson Stadium seemed close as he was reportedly one step away from signing for the Merseyside outfit, but that may not be the case.

Barry transfer to Everton not imminent as talks progressing well

Barry’s transfer to the Toffees from Villarreal this summer isn’t imminent, Alan Myers says.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

The former Sky Sports journalist revealed on X (1July) that while talks between the Blues and the La Liga outfit are progressing well for the Frenchman, there’s still work to be done on a potential deal.

Myers has shared that there are positive signs regarding the 22-year-old striker’s transfer, but supporters will sweat over the possibility of another team swooping in.

The journalist wrote on X (1 July): “Deal to bring Thierno Barry to Everton is progressing well. Still work to do and nothing imminent on it, but positive signs.”

Moyes can’t afford to lose another transfer target at Bramley-Moore Dock

Moyes desperately wanted Liam Delap at the Toffees this summer, but the centre-forward opted to join Chelsea from Ipswich Town.

The Blues have had to shift their focus to other striker targets in recent weeks, and fans will hope they secure a deal to sign Barry from Villarreal soon before it falls through as well.

Beto and Youssef Chermiti are now the only number nines at the Scottish manager’s disposal, and the Merseyside outfit clearly need a reliable goalscorer.

While Everton will miss Calvert-Lewin to some extent, the Englishman’s consistent fitness issues over the years made him a liability.

Armando Broja was also an option for Moyes last season, but the Albania international spent most of his time on the treatment table and went back to Chelsea after his loan expired.

The Scottish manager was able to get the best out of Beto during a crucial period in the previous campaign, but whether he trusts the Guinea-Bissau striker to be his first-choice number nine in the coming months remains to be seen.

Barry’s transfer is arguably needed at the Blues, but only time will tell how long the negotiations will take.
