Just when some analysts thought the Milwaukee Bucks would simply accept their fate as possible non-contenders after Damian Lillard suffered an Achilles tendon tear, they shocked the world by waiving the All-NBA point guard from their roster. Of course, released Lillard with the knowledge that they’d sign Myles Turner.
Still, the sudden news of Lillard becoming available on the open market is completely unexpected. Even though he likely won’t be available for the bulk of the regular season, a market is already forming for the nine-time All-Star’s services.
In fact, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes, teams like the Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers shouldn’t be ruled out when it comes to signing Lillard.
There’s no word on what type of contract Lillard is looking to sign, but being that the soon-to-be 35-year-old will need to prove he’s healthy again before teams expect him to play at a high level, he could come at a bargain rate.
Plus, it’s possible Lillard is only interested in signing a short-term deal, such as one that only lasts one or two seasons, giving him a chance to prove himself, and then possibly even cash in again if he plans on playing for several more seasons.
Either way, one of the best point guards of the modern era is now a free agent, and he’ll likely have no shortage of suitors.
