Lakers Prepare Backup Plan Amid Deandre Ayton Trade Rumors

One of the biggest question marks this offseason is how the Lakers plan to shore up their frontcourt after parting ways with Anthony Davis. Finding a reliable center who can protect the rim is now priority number one for the team if they want to stay in the championship mix.

While trade rumors around Deandre Ayton have definitely caught fans’ attention, the Lakers know better than to put all their eggs in one basket. Behind the scenes, they’re already putting together a solid backup plan to make sure they’re covered because one way or another, they need to fill that spot.

Dan Woike posted an update on X about the Lakers' hunt saying, "Sources tell me that in addition to Deandre Ayton, the Lakers are still evaluating other options in free agency and via trade. Obviously a crucial decision for the Lakers -- would expect an answer in the upcoming days."

Through day one of free agency, the Lakers still haven’t solved their big hole at center. They were eyeing guys like Brook Lopez and Clint Capela, but those options disappeared fast as Lopez signed with the Clippers and Capela got traded to the Rockets.

Now, all eyes are on Deandre Ayton, who hit the market after a surprise buyout with the Trail Blazers.

On paper, Ayton’s a perfect fit, and having Luka Doncic share the same agent might help the Lakers’ chances. But if they lose out on Ayton, they’re in a tight spot with few backup options left. Al Horford’s name has popped up as a possible plan B, but missing Ayton would be a huge setback for L.A.
