DeWine calls taking unclaimed money for Browns stadium a ‘win for taxpayers,’ though critics…

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Gov. Mike DeWine on Tuesday praised Ohio’s newly enacted plan to take $1.7 billion in state-held unclaimed funds to help pay for a new Cleveland Browns stadium and other sports and cultural facilities, calling it “a pretty big achievement” that will help the state long into the future.

DeWine’s decision late Monday to sign the new state budget without vetoing the stadium-funding plan drew quick praise from Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, among others. But Democratic critics, including elected officials in Northeast Ohio, condemned the new move as a shameful giveaway to the billionaire Haslam family.
