NBA free agency: Knicks near scoring threat acquisition for bench

The Knicks are set to add a former NBA Sixth Man of the Year in free agency.

Jordan Clarkson, the 2021 NBA Sixth Man with the Utah Jazz, will join the Knicks on the veteran’s minimum after clearing waivers with the Jazz, per ESPN. Clarkson is represented by Rich Paul of Klutch Sports.

The 6-foot-3 Clarkson gives the Knicks a veteran combo guard who can handle the ball and give Jalen Brunson help in the backcourt.

Clarkson, who played college ball at Tulsa and Missouri, can play on and off the ball and bolsters the backcourt as the Knicks look to make a run back to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Clarkson, 33, has averaged 16.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists during his career with the Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers and L.A. Lakers. He had four 30-point games during the 2023-24 season.

He averaged 16.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 37 games last season with the Jazz.

As NBA writer Tommy Beer pointed out, the entire Knicks benched combined to average 15.8 points per game last season.

The Knicks are still without a coach after firing Tom Thibodeau following the season, but veteran NBA coach Mike Brown has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner.

“I heard they’re trying to get something done before summer league starts,” ESPN’s Marc Spears said on air. “Mike Brown’s name is rising.”

Brown, 55, coached under Gregg Popovich, Rick Carlisle, and Steve Kerr.

He is a two-time NBA Coach of the Year (2009 and ‘23).
