Ex-Penn State basketball player, 2023 March Madness hero lands NBA Summer League invite

After jumping between organizations and spending most of his time in the G-League, former Penn State sharpshooter Andrew Funk is getting another NBA shot.

Funk, a Pennsylvania native, signed with the Philadelphia 76ers to participate in their summer league games. They begin July 10 in Las Vegas.

Funk became the fourth former Nittany Lion to join a new NBA squad this summer, joining Los Angeles Clippers first-round pick Yanic Konan Niederhauser (2024-25) and summer-league invites Ace Baldwin Jr. (2023-2025) with the Memphis Grizzlies and Zach Hicks (2023-2025) with the Boston Celtics.

After his iconic performance in the 2023 NCAA Tournament run for Penn State, Funk joined the Denver Nuggets on an Exhibit-10 deal. He didn’t make his NBA debut, however, until signing a two-way contract with the Chicago Bulls in February 2024.

He played 11 minutes across four games without scoring a point, going 0-for-3 from the field. He then re-joined the Nuggets last fall, playing eight minutes in an Oct. 15 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Funk made his only 3-point attempt to score his first NBA points.

In his lone season at Penn State, Funk started all 37 games and averaged 12.5 points on 41.2% shooting from deep. His legendary performance came against Texas A&M in the first-round win for the Lions in March Madness, scoring 27 points on eight triples. It was Penn State’s first NCAA Tournament win since the 2010-2011 season, and the Lions have not returned since.
