Shai extends the timeline, signs supermax

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the greatest Thunder player of all time, has signed a super maximum contract extension to play in Oklahoma City through the 2030-31 season, when he will be 32. SGA was already signed through 2026-27, and opted for a four-year extension (he could have extend up to five).

Shai just got more valuable.

The new face of Thunder basketball, Shai has grown into a legend while leading the franchise through its patient, remarkably successful rebuild since being acquired in the Paul George blockbuster of 2019. As I wrote earlier this season, SGA is the kind of cornerstone rarely seen in modern sports:

Shai isn't just saying the right things, he's doing things that only the rarest of superstars do to help their franchises chase dynasties. Setting the bar as a psycho competitor and a winner. Caring about the fundamentals and improvements in their own game, not just the quality of their supporting cast. Working with the front office to time and construct a long-time title contender without inviting stress about their future that can unnerve a franchise and lead to shortcuts and mistakes. Tim Duncan. Tom Brady. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. We've known for a while that Shai is the Timeline for Oklahoma City. As the league's contenders start cracking up his closest competition, it's clear that the shared strength of SGA and OKC is helping reset the NBA timeline for everyone else, too.

Gilgeous-Alexander over-cleared the criteria for a supermax candidate, having completed 7+ years in the league, winning the 2025 MVP, and being selected to three consecutive All-NBA First teams and counting. As is common when the latest players get super-maxed, Shai will become the highest paid per-year player in NBA history. He has a good chance to make over half a billion dollars in his playing career, as this contract pushes him past $400 million. He also stands to have some extra change in his pocket, since he came to the agreement without the services of an agent.

Listen: Does Shai love OKC, for real?
