“That’s It?!” Milwaukee Bucks Fans Floored by Surprisingly Low Salary for Gary Trent Jr. on New …

On Monday, the first day of NBA free agency, the Milwaukee Bucks made a series of moves that were met with mixed reactions by their fanbase. They re-signed Kevin Porter Jr., a combo guard, after he performed well for the team in 30 games following their acquisition of him in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers. While this move made perfect basketball sense, many fans did not like it (as they did not like the trade) due to Porter’s previous history of domestic violence.

Additionally, the Bucks also re-signed Taurean Prince, who was third in the NBA among qualified shooters in three-point percentage. However, many fans did not like this signing either because head coach Doc Rivers frequently played him out of position.

But one move that Milwaukee made that was met with glee from the majority of fans was re-signing shooting guard Gary Trent Jr.

Milwaukee Bucks Fans Are Ecstatic that Gary Trent Jr. Is Back on a Team-Friendly Contract

At the beginning of free agency, many fans and analysts believed that Trent would command, and get, anywhere between $8-10 million a season. However, he signed a two-year $7.5 million deal to remain in Milwaukee (with a player option for the second season).

And fans could not believe it:

Wow! That’s a bargain deal. Would have to think there’s a PO so he can re-sign with Bird rights in a year. Best of all looks like this is another non-Bird deal (120% of his min) which would mean they’d retain full MLE. https://t.co/qmdJuAmb7W

Uhhhhhh that feels like an incredible deal for the Bucks https://t.co/FEiFTnPHnD

Trent likely took such a low salary on this contract because the Bucks will have his Bird rights next year. At that point, he will decline his player option and likely re-sign on a longer contract for far more money.

Still, this is a slight raise for him. He played last season on a one-year contract worth the veteran minimum, roughly $2 million.
