Man Utd need more experience and firepower in attack and have just missed a transfer tap-in.
It has been a strange summer for Manchester United with a quick start to the summer gradually grinding to a halt despite a lot of work needing to be done throughout the squad.
Ruben Amorim’s hands remained tied behind his back with problems in defence, midfield and the forward line where signing a new striker to lead the line is paramount. Signing Matheus Cunha was a positive start, however, there are no guarantees that Bryan Mbeumo will follow.
Viktor Gyokeres was the initial target, then the names changed to Victor Osimhen and Hugo Ekitike, however, there is a cut price move that United could have made to plug the gap and relieve some of the pressure.
The Red Devil’s boss needs an experienced forward who can be trusted to settle into English football straight away so why not sign an English striker.
Man Utd miss transfer tap-in as Tammy Abraham leaves Serie A
There are always bargains to be had in the transfer market but United have missed out on a cut-price move for a proven No.9 in Tammy Abraham who is set to confirm his departure from Serie A to sign for Besiktas.
It is a move that has come out of left field and it is bizarre that his exploits in Italy haven’t attracted interest from the Premier League. As a home-grown player, he would also make squad building easier in the future.
The 27-year old left the Premier League with a goal every three games, but he is a better player now than when he left, he has also spent time under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Abraham has agreed a four-year deal in Turkey.
What did Mourinho say that Abraham needed to improve?
What The Special One taught Abraham could have been useful for United, via The Telegraph: “Just be a monster, really,” he said, when asked what Mourinho had taught him.
“I think one of the things he said was I was too much of a nice player and that you have to show that aggressiveness as you’re getting older as a striker. It’s not always about being nice on the pitch. You need that character, you need that presence to frighten defenders and I think that’s something I’m learning and getting better at.
“One thing I didn’t expect was it to be so tough. Players are very smart and defending is very important in the Italian style of play,” he said. “So for me it was about learning the other side. In England we’re so used to attack, attack, attack and for me it’s about learning the other way – how to break down them teams. It’s part of the learning curve and you see the likes of Lukaku et cetera who have gone abroad and come back to England and for me it’s about developing myself.”
United have been looking at big money strikers this summer and missed a tap in, much like the current strikers that they have at Ruben Amorim’s disposal.
