Reports: Juventus agree to deal to sign Canadian striker Jonathan David

The first step in the remaking of Juventus’ attack appears to be on the cusp taking place.

And that means a big domino — with potential red-and-white coloring from his native Canada — is about to fall in Turin.

According to reports from Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto early Wednesday morning, Juventus and Canadian striker Jonathan David have reached a deal in the hours following the Bianconeri’s ouster from the Club World Cup. That means the 25-year-old David, who is officially free agent after seeing his contract with Lille expire on the final day of June, is set to become the first signing of the Damien Comolli front office, with a salary worth a reported €5 million plus another potential €2 million in bonuses set to come his way on a long-term contract that is likely to run through 2029 or 2030.

When the deal will become official still remains to be seen. Same goes for just how much Juve will pay when it comes to agent fees since signing in-demand out-of-contract players is never truly free these days. But David is close to officially becoming a Juventus player — a chase that goes back well into the previous front office’s time in charge.

David joined Lille after three seasons with Belgian side Gent in 2020. Since then, he’s scored in double figures in each of those five seasons in Ligue 1. This past season, David scored 16 goals and recorded five assists — the third straight season that he had over 20 goal contributions to his name against French opposition. He also scored seven goals in 10 appearances in the Champions League this past season.

That is what you call prediction for a player who is very much already in or about to enter his prime.

With Dusan Vlahovic’s future in Turin looking extremely bleak after he wasn’t willing to extend his contract and spread out his Serie A-high salary over another season, getting David in was a key summer priority for Comolli and Giorgio Chiellini. David has been a Juve target dating back to Cristiano Giuntoli’s days in charge of the sporting area, and that hasn’t changed now that Comolli is general manager.

David had previous interest from across Europe, including be linked with a handful of top English sides as well as clubs in Spain. He was also a target of Napoli before Antonio Conte’s side shifted its attention to Darwin Núñez and other attacking players.
