Tables have turned - Newcastle United raid Liverpool in huge transfer twist

Newcastle United are set to add another talented youngster to their ever-growing academy ranks.

Newcastle United are reportedly set to sign talented Liverpool youngster Isaac Moran.

The midfielder turned 16 in March and is understood to have snubbed a scholar’s contract on Merseyside. An England captain at youth level, Moran has already represented Liverpool’s under-18s outfit.

The Daily Mail claim Newcastle have snatched the prospect from under the Reds’ noses in a major transfer coup. Toon fans will not forget losing Bobby Clark - son of former United star Lee - to Liverpool months before the Saudi-backed takeover.

His exit was seen as an indictment of a Mike Ashley era that neglected youth investment. However, under Saudi-backed ownership, the Magpies have made a conscious effort to bolster the academy ranks.

Newcastle United’s PSR thinking

The likes of Garang Kuol, Alex Murphy and Yankuba Minteh all arrived to break into Eddie Howe’s first team. More recently, Vakhtang Salia, Baran Yildiz and Antonio Cordero have joined the Toon setup.

Even if they do not make the cut at St James’ Park, flipping them for a profit would give Newcastle a lever when tackling PSR concerns. This is an effective method used by the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City to bankroll big-money signings.

Alexander Isak irony

The irony will not be lost on Newcastle fans that they are set to raid Liverpool for a player named Isaac. National outlets have desperately tried to link goal machine Alexander Isak with an Anfield move in recent weeks.

NewcastleWorld understands the Magpies have no intention of selling their talisman - who has three years left on his current deal. The plan remains to add to the squad ahead of a Champions League campaign despite no sign of a breakthrough so far.

Eddie Howe on importance of youth

Howe stressed the need to flesh out the talent emerging from the academy when speaking to the press last season. He told reporters: “I just focus on the first-team recruitment and those who are coming into my squad. In terms of the other players (at youth level), that is left to other people, and it is very difficult to give the time, energy, and detail needed to cover that.

"But it is important that we do sign underneath the first-team squad, and we do strengthen in those areas. So that we give ourselves the best chance long-term and financially. And also give those players an opportunity."
