Liverpool have now set their asking price for winger Harvey Elliott, who played a starring role in England’s triumphant Under-21 European Championship triumph. The 22-year-old scored five goals in six matches for the Young Lions, bagging the Player of the Tournament award in the process.

"Without doubt England's most effective player from the first game onwards," UEFA’s Technical Observer Group said of Elliott after England defeated Germany 3-2 in Saturday’s final. "Tactically, he showed incredible awareness to be able to find the spaces to receive passes in dangerous positions, and then the ability to make a difference inclusive of creating and scoring some of his team's most crucial goals in their winning campaign.

"He also showed excellent leadership qualities with a great work ethic and team behaviour. A big player for the big stage."

While many Liverpool fans would be disappointed to see Elliott leave Anfield, particularly after his recent eye-catching performances for his country, the current Premier League champions have now decided on an asking price. Elliott appears to be surplus to requirements at Liverpool following the £116 million purchase of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported on Tuesday that Liverpool are demanding a fee in excess of £40 million, plus a buy-back option, from interested clubs. However, they could accept an offer that doesn’t include a buy-back option, providing they receive a fee in excess of £50 million.

Elliott, who joined Liverpool from Blackburn Rovers for an undisclosed fee in 2019, currently has two years left on his contract at Liverpool and is understood to earn £40,000 per week. He will have no shortage of potential suitors this summer and a hefty pay rise looks inevitable once he completes a move away from Merseyside.

Football Insider’s transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke added on Wednesday morning that a number of top German clubs have joined Premier League sides in the battle for Elliott’s signature. Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are reportedly keeping tabs on the situation.

O’Rourke also says that Liverpool will sell Elliott if they receive a bid of £40 million, with no mention of a buy-back clause being required to sign a player who was considered one of the best young players in world football prior to his 22nd birthday on April 4.

The report adds that Elliott is a target for Brighton, as well as other top-flight English clubs including both Brentford and his former employers Fulham. More teams could also join the race now that Liverpool’s reasonable asking price for such a talented young footballer has come to light. Newcastle United are another team who are looking into a potential move.
