Erik ten Hag has officially joined Bayer Leverkusen in his first managerial role since leaving Manchester United back in October 2024.
The Dutchman is taking the reigns as former manager Xabi Alonso has headed to Spain, taking on the Real Madrid hotseat, already impressing in the Club World Cup.
With the pre-season only days away now, it’s understandable that ten Hag is wanting to get his squad in line to start getting some consistency in training ahead of the new season.
As such, Leverkusen are looking at several signings, needing to replace Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong who have both joined Liverpool.
However, the German side are also looking at offloading some more players, with PSV Eindhoven now in contact with the club over one of their goalkeepers.
Florian Plettenberg has revealed that PSV and Leverkusen have officially started negotiating over 25-year-old goalkeeper Matej Kovar.
The Czechia international has been a backup keeper for club captain Lukas Hradecky, however has made 15 appearances last season, registering 9 clean sheets.
It’s understood that the 6ft 4in goalkeeper is keen for a move to the Dutch club, making this deal the second time that Erik ten Hag will have sold the youngster.
Matej Kovar was a product of the Manchester United academy, having joined the youth set up from Slovacko in 2018.
In 2022 he graduated from the academy to the senior team, however never made an appearance for the Red Devils first team, getting sold to Bayer Leverkusen a year later under the management of ten Hag.
Whilst ten Hag has limited authority over the recruitment for his new club, this never the less creates a unique situation for Kovar with the only two permanent transfer in his career being under the leadership of Erik ten Hag.
