As it stands today, the Denver Broncos' wide receiver depth chart looks roughly like this:
Courtland Sutton
Devaughn Vele
Marvin Mims Jr.
Troy Franklin
Pat Bryant
Trent Sherfield Sr.
A.T. Perry
Michael Bandy
Joaquin Davis
Courtney Jackson
Jerjuan Newton
Kyrese White
I would argue that this wide receiver group is one of the thinner groups as far as talent goes in the NFL. There’s a lot of potential, but they are mostly young players, with some of the key players at the top of the chart being niche players (namely Marvin Mims, Jr., and Troy Franklin).
The good thing is that Sean Payton does an excellent job as a coach, getting successful plays out of the players he has on the roster. He will use each of the players on the roster in week 1 to help this offense be successful.
What we need to see this season is one of the young guns at WR to step up in a big way to be a productive force for this offense. Here are the 3 guys I think have a serious shot to do that and how:
Devaughn Vele
Vele showed us last season that he has what it takes to play at the NFL level. This year, he needs to show more consistency and develop more ability to create separation with his route running in order to take that big step forward for this offense.
Marvin Mimms, Jr.
Mimms has wowed us with his ability to be a deep threat. For him to do more than just have a handful of big plays each season, he needs to develop his route-running ability to provide more of an impact in being able to move the chains for the offense on 3rd down.
Pat Bryant
Rookie Pat Byrant was getting rave reviews in his early offseason work so far with the Broncos. For him to help the Broncos in a big way, he needs to show up early and often this season with chain-moving plays.
The elephant in the room here is Troy Franklin. I’d love to think he could take a big step forward this season, but I saw too much poor play last season from him. I’m happy to have him change my mind, but until he shows the consistent goods, I’m not a believer that he’s going to make a significant impact for the offense.
